Cinco de Mayo is a celebration that honours the unlikely victory of the Mexican Army that occurred in 1862. Despite the recent presidential election, the United States took this day as a celebration of the coming together of the Mexican-American culture. Today we continue to celebrate this victory through the shared appreciation of its cultural aspects.
We know too well that landing a last minute reservation on Cinco de Mayo can be harder than deciding which tattoo to put on your body. If you are not interested in sitting on a wait list for 2-3 weeks to be told they are still fully committed, then maybe take a stab at an at home party. This doubles as a money saving idea for those who are on a budget, too. Most items can be picked up at your favourite go-to cheap stores, and lets be real, no one will care about your decorations or where you got your piñata after 2-3 margaritas.
The first step to a memorable Cinco De Mayo at home is having a great crowd pleasing drink. I personally like to keep this fresh and healthy (minus the alcohol). I looked through a lot of great recipes online and instead of doing a classic Margarita, I decided to change things up. I recently looked at a blog that had Peach Margaritas. The recipe is all natural and has a delicious flavor. If you are not a fan of peaches then you can simply replace it with your preferred fruit.
- 2 oz. Silver tequila
- ½ cup peeled, diced peaches
- 1 oz. Fresh lime juice
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 2 oz. Sparking water
- Rim your drink glasses with salt. Simply wet the rim of the glasses with a slice of lime and then press the glass into salt.
- Place the peaches, tequila, lime juice, ice and honey into a blender. Blend together then poor into glasses and serve.
The next step to a successful at home Cinco De Mayo party is a Taco Bar! I’m personally a huge fan of tacos and eat more than I would like to admit. If you’re a vegetarian then you can simply replace the meat with your favourite vegetable or meat alternative product (we suggest beans that are popular in Mexican cuisine). To rock the best taco bar, you need the following items:
- Pickled vegetables
- Sour cream
- Hot sauce
- Shredded cheese
- Desired meat
The best way to run a taco bar is to set it up as an assembly line. Place all of your toppings in bowls or on plates for people to help themselves to. It saves time and makes your night as a host a lot simpler. Once the meat is cooked, I usually place it on the table with a spoon for people to self-serve. Put the plates and cutlery on either end of the table then dig in!
You really can’t disappoint with these great, easy recipes. Happy Cinco De Mayo!
